Follow the ORANGE links for our recommendations.

No matter who you choose to buy energy from, your local utility will continue to deliver your electricity and/or gas and respond to service interruptions and outages. You will still pay your utility for these services. Depending on your area, you can choose to receive a single bill from your utility listing your utility delivery charges and competitive supply charges, or separate bills from the utility and alternate energy provider.  The information on this page was last updated on June 15, 2011.  Please be sure to get accurate and up-to-date information before making any decision.

Electric:

Arizona opened its electricity market to competition in the late 1990s, but the market was suspended in 2004 due to a decision by a state appellate court. Since that time, there have been no alternative energy suppliers that have been licensed by the Arizona Corporation Commission, and consequently, no shopping. The Corporation Commission is currently studying whether it should re-open the market to competition. Rate caps that were part of the transition to competition at the two biggest utilities, Arizona Public Service and Tucson Electric Power, have been lifted.

Natural Gas:

Large users of natural gas in Arizona, often known as transportation-level customers, are able to nominate an alternative provider for their natural gas supplies instead of their local utility. Under transportation service, the customer's marketer is able to use the utility's pipelines to transport the gas to the customer.
